A cause of poor balance after stroke is impaired muscle strength and coordination in the legs and core. Therefore, pursuing exercise to improve strength and coordination in both the legs and the core muscles can result in improved balance.
In addition to generalised rehabilitative exercises, practicing weight-shifting exercises, balance tasks, and gait training can be especially effective.
ARNI Trainers are excellent resources to consult about which leg and core exercises may be most effective for your specific condition.

There are ways to restore significant function and reverse non-use of limbs at whatever point from injury you happen to be, whether it is a month or 10 years. CIMT is a magnificent example of this. I can advise you that for certain, you can forget about the 6-month rule (after which many of the stroke survivors have been told that not much significant recovery of any sort will be made). Forget the 1-year rule. Forget the 3-year rule! In fact, forget ‘the rules’, ok? Very limiting things, rules... because we tend to follow them blindly without asking why they are there or who made them up.

ou know that free weights not only allow you to do the movement in a way that is more natural to you, they also allow for slight variations in the exercise, which many machines (found in gyms) do not.

Your results will be directly proportional to the consistency you show to yourself. This is why keeping some sort of training diary are really essential. Don’t even think about not buying or making one. If you can write well enough, buy an A4 diary or buy a dedicated training diary from ARNI via the website. If you can’t write, but can access a computer, set up your own spreadsheet to use.

New news: women who feel stressed, but NOT men, may have a higher risk of stroke. So, ladies, try not to elevate your stress levels continuously, if you can at all help it; it is associated with a stroke risk!!
Some people living with chronic stress have a higher risk of stroke, according to a study published on March 5, 2025 in the medical journal Neurology®. The study looked at younger adults and found an association between stress and stroke, with no known cause, in female participants, but not male participants. This study does not prove that stress causes stroke; it only shows an association.
'Younger people often experience stress due to the demands and pressures associated with work, including long hours and job insecurity, as well as financial burdens," said Nicolas Martinez-Majander, MD, PhD, of the Helsinki University Hospital in Finland.
After adjusting for factors that could affect risk of stroke such as education level, alcohol use and blood pressure, researchers found for female participants, moderate stress was associated with a 78% increased risk of stroke and high stress was associated with a 6% increased risk. Researchers did not find a link between stress and stroke in male participants.

Interesting, thanks for sharing. Is this the right way round? "moderate stress was associated with a 78% increased risk of stroke and high stress was associated with a 6% increased risk."
Hmm, I have to disagree.

Consistent rehabilitation exercise is an essential for stroke recovery. You need to gain experience with movement in order to improve at moving your body. The more you practice leg exercises, for example, the more your leg mobility will improve as a result of that experience.

The ARNI Approach uses short, formal retraining sessions which encompass task-related training, physical coping strategies and resistance training. You can do them yourself or with the help of a trainer. All of these three complement each other and the sum of the three will give better outcomes from the limitations from stroke than using them separately.
