a pic of Tom to inspire you - 4 and a bit years after stroke. Deadlift from floor with ten 20kg plates. All Ihe had was some Gold's gym plates he bought, an EZ bar and a chinning bar. He added tiny bits of weights every week to the EZ bar, no more than a couple of washers, adding up to quarter of kilo. So it never felt any much heavier. Along with the towel chins he negated total hemiparesis on the left side of his body, 1 inch drop shoulder, but never managed to beat drop foot. But hey.! And one other thing, he'd never lifted weights before stroke. So, Hope this gives you pause for thought. The evidence shows quite clearly now that increase strength and you gain back function after stroke. So, forget about social media and concentrate on getting strong, preferably in a room in your house with chintzy curtains! ;) Dr Tom says Get Strong ;)

A recent study from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) suggests that just 30 minutes of daily sunlight exposure could significantly boost recovery outcomes for stroke survivors. This finding of course means that we in England are completely stuffed ;) ;)
We do like to moan about our weather - but the research is kind of interesting - it indicates that Vitamin D synthesis and the natural circadian rhythm regulation provided by the sun play a role in reducing post-stroke inflammation and enhancing neuroplasticity. This seems to add a biological layer to the recovery puzzle... ☀️🧠
Despite our lack of reliable sunshine, the principle of optimising every available recovery variable remains the hallmark of the intrepid stroke survivor. If the British clouds are blocking our Vitamin D, it means we've gotta double down on our functional task training to ensure the brain is receiving the strongest possible signals for change. We may not have the luxury of a 30-minute daily sunbath in the UK, but we like to think we have the home-grown grit and the expert-led training infrastructure to ensure that our recoveries are possible, regardless of the forecast ✨

The Functional Rehabilitation and Exercise Training after Stroke (FRETS) qualification stands as the definitive benchmark for any professional serious about delivering elite-level neuro-rehabilitation in the UK. This rigorous course, developed by the ARNI Stroke Rehab UK Institute, during which the trainer works one to one with a stroke survivor, is officially accredited by NCG with 300 CPD points - and focuses on the high-intensity, task-specific training required to move beyond basic maintenance. For the survivor, this means access to a specialist who understands exactly how to apply the principles of neuroplasticity to overcome the physical limitations of hemiparesis and regain meaningful independence 🧠🦾
Choosing a trainer who has successfully completed this qualification ensures that your recovery is guided by evidence-based strategies rather than guesswork. The ARNI Charity remains committed to bridging the gap between hospital discharge and long-term community recovery by supporting the training of these expert instructors across the country. By aligning clinical knowledge with an athletic mindset, the FRETS course empowers professionals to help you tackle the most stubborn functional hurdles, from improving gait stability to mastering the fine-motor control needed for daily living ⚡️🧤
For any survivor or therapist looking to elevate their approach, this accreditation represents a seal of excellence that prioritises real-world results over passive stretching. The institute continues to refine these teaching methods to ensure they meet the evolving needs of the stroke community in 2026, providing a structured pathway for those who refuse to accept a recovery plateau. By investing in this calibre of expertise, we can ensure that every survivor has the best possible fighting chance to rewrite their future and return to a life of high-performance and autonomy 🌟🦾

Preliminary research has revealed that electromagnetic network-targeted field therapy (ENTF), when combined with traditional physical therapy, significantly reduces disability in stroke survivors by stimulating specific neural connections with electromagnetic pulses. An analysis of two small clinical trials suggests that this non-invasive treatment is not only safe but highly effective at modulating the brain's internal networks to improve functional outcomes. For the serious survivor, this represents a sophisticated new layer of neurorehab that targets the biological 'wiring' of the brain, providing a primed environment where physical effort can yield much greater results than standard care alone. 🧠⚡️
This high-tech intervention aligns perfectly with the mission of the ARNI Stroke Rehab UK Institute, which focuses on the precise application of task-specific practice to drive neuroplasticity. While the ARNI Charity provides the essential physical strategies and expert tuition needed to retrain the body, ENTF could act as a powerful catalyst to unlock dormant pathways before a survivor begins their intensive gym work. By combining the electromagnetic stimulation of these clinical trials with the rigorous, athletic framework of the ARNI approach, survivors can bridge the gap between neurological stabilisation and the complex motor control required for real-world independence. 🦾✨
As of early 2026, survivors in the UK interested in ENTF can look for recruitment in academic clinical trials through major research hubs like University College London or the University of Oxford, where neuromodulation is being heavily studied. Because this therapy is designed to be synergistic, it would work alongside your ARNI training by 'priming' the motor cortex just before you engage in high-repetition functional drills. Dr Tom recommends discussing these emerging non-invasive brain stimulation options with your neurologist if you still have one to see if you meet the criteria for ongoing UK-based pilot sc#ARNIstrokerehabi#neuroplasticityo#BrainStimulations#strokerecovery2026a#MedTechInnovationry2026 #MedTechInnovation

In order to attempt to 'rewire' your brain after stroke so that your movements become, you need to try to perform as many task repetitions as possible. Each time you repeat a movement, connections (holding information about that particular motion) in your brain tend to become that little bit stronger. Remember Tom's phrase 'only your involvement in movement can bring about improvement!' Type it out a large size font and stick it somewhere you tend to retrain!
A question for you! How many task repetitions do you do personally do? Are we talking tens or hundreds in any#arnistrokecharitys#strokea#strokesurvivors #neuroplasticityurvivors #neuroplasticity

Andrea Berry’s journey from suffering a stroke in Cardiff to regaining her place behind the wheel is a powerful testament to the grit required for a successful recovery. While resting after packing for a house move, she suddenly found herself in what she described as a terrifying experience where parts of her body simply began shutting down. Andrea vividly recalled that she just didn't understand what was happening, feeling like a child in an adult's body, and the sheer horror of trying to shout for help only to find her voice wasn't working.
After surviving that ordeal, (during which Andrea's family wrapped her in a duvet cover, carried her to the car and drove her to the hospital themselves due to a four-hour wait for an ambulance!), she revamped her entire lifestyle, losing five stone and embracing a second chance at life with the goal of returning to the road as her primary mission. 🚗✨
This relentless drive to reclaim independence is exactly what the ARNI Stroke Rehab UK Institute champions through its rigorous, evidence-based approach to neuro-rehabilitation. The ARNI Charity works tirelessly to ensure survivors are equipped with the physical strategies and mental tenacity needed to accomplish specific milestones just like Andrea's. By focusing on task-specific training and functional strength, our instructors help survivors bridge the gap between clinical stabilisation and the complex motor control required for tasks such as operating a vehicle safely once again. 🧠🦾
Getting back into the driver's seat is a monumental goal for many, representing a return to freedom and normal life. We want to hear from our community about your own experiences with this particular challenge. Did you manage to relearn how to drive after your stroke, and what did that success feel like for you? We are also very interested to know if you utilise any specific adaptations, such as steering wheel knobs or floor-mounted paddles to work the controls, and how these tools have helped you navigate the road to independence.. please tell us all in the comments below! 🛣️🌟
