ARNI Stroke Rehab UK reveals today that a pioneering company has produced the worldâs first entire arm exoskeleton (VilPower), designed to assist stroke survivors' movements for the entire arm, from the shoulder, down to the elbow and right into the hand đĻž
Until now, exoskeletons for those with paretic arms covered only up to the elbow and used sensors on the skin but Vilje Bionicâs prototype uses a novel sensor technology that doesnât need skin contact.
The potential for this device to improve quality of life and independence for countless stroke survivors is absolutely massive... we all know how challenging regaining movement can be after a stroke, especially in the more-affected upper limb. The VilPower system is designed to directly address this.
It works by detecting a survivor's initial intention to move their arm and then uses smart motors to provide the necessary support and power to complete the movement. This makes everyday tasks like reaching for a glass, holding a book or brushing hair possible again! âđ By assisting the full range of motion, the VilPower encourages neuroplasticityâĻ allowing survivors to repeatedly practice real-world, functional movements.
It's in the development and clinical testing stages at the moment, but ARNI Stroke Rehab UK says that this is part of the near future for stroke survivors to help them manage

An innovative company called EMVision has just developed a portable brain scanner! It's called âEmuâ (short for electromagnetic unit and named after the fast Aussie bird!) đâī¸ This device is designed to rapidly detect and classify strokes right at the patient's bedside, in the ICU, or even potentially in an ambulance!
This invention is groundbreaking because it brings the diagnostic tool directly to the patient, instead of needing to rush them to a huge, complex CT or MRI machine. The emu is lightweight, uses safe ultra-high frequency radio signals (no ionizing radiation), and the whole scanning process can take under ten minutes ;)
The most amazing part is its potential to help doctors quickly figure out if a stroke is caused by a bleed or a blockage. Knowing this critical information immediately helps deploy the right treatment faster, which dramatically increases the chance of a good recovery and less long-term disability.
EMVision started a pivotal trial for the emu earlier this year across sites in the US and Australia to validate its performance and help secure FDA clearance. While it's still an investigational device right now, the early results and the hope this technology offers are truly inspiring.
This breakthrough could mean faster diagnoses for patients in regional and rural areas, or anyone who can't get to a major hospital quickly. ARNI Stroke Rehab readers are keeping our fingers crossed for the success of these trials; this is definitely a development which can âmove the dialâ â¨

Hey everyone! đ I wanted to share an incredibly inspiring story that I think will really resonate with all of us in the stroke survivor community â¤ī¸. Itâs about finding new passions and pushing through those dark times after a stroke.
Meet Liz Elmont, from Watchet in Somerset. Liz suffered a stroke back in 2021, and like many of us can relate to, it left her feeling housebound and isolated đĨ. She thought she would never be able to pursue her love of photography again. That feeling of losing a part of yourself is tough, but Liz didn't give up!
She found an innovative way to keep going and rediscovered her passion by taking weather photos! đ¸ Focusing on the sky and the changing weather patterns got her out of a 'really dark place', as she describes it. This simple act of focusing on the world around her, one snapshot at a time, not only reignited her creative spark but also encouraged her to get outside and engage with life again đ¤ī¸.
Liz's story is a beautiful reminder that recovery isn't just about physical movement; itâs about mental and emotional well-being too. Finding something that brings you joy, something innovative and personal to you, can be a powerful tool in your journey. Whether it's photography, painting, writing, gardening or something completely new, finding that one thing can make a world of difference.
ARNI Stroke Rehab UK says let's encourage each other to find our âweather photosâ! We shouldn't at all be afraid to try new things or adapt old hobbies to fit our new abilities. We are definitely resilient, creative, and capable of amazing things! ⨠Keep innovating and inspiring! đĒđ

Tom says 'Life will never be the same for anyone who has survived a stroke, but successful survivors are those who can accept the reality of their new situations with a positive attitude. As such they are able to try to live each day productively, with as much creativity and fulfilment as possible within the new boundaries imposed by stroke. If youâve hired a therapist or trainer to get you started (advised), you must have maximal input towards your own rehabilitation and the way you want to go, and feel able to ask for it if youâre not getting it. Activity is the watchword!'

Hi all! đ Do you know that if you're a heavy drinkers the chances are that you'll be just 64 years old when have a stroke: a whole 11 years younger than people who drank less alcohol? đ§
A study from Harvard, which was published in the journal Neurology, focused on 1,600 adults with an average age of 75 and a specific type of stroke caused by bleeding in the brain (intracerebral hemorrhage)... and found a significant difference in the age at which heavy drinkers experienced a stroke compared to those who drank less alcohol đŽ
This is a stark reminder that excessive alcohol consumption isn't just a long-term risk factor; it can accelerate the onset of severe health issues like stroke, bringing them into mid-life rather than much later in old age. The study also noted that the brain bleeds in heavy drinkers were, on average, 70% larger and often occurred in deeper brain regions, indicating poorer health outcomes.
ARNIStrokeRehabUK says that this info is critical for all of us in the stroke community, as we know how vital prevention and healthy lifestyle choices are for recovery and reducing the risk of a secondary stroke. It underscores the need to be mindful of our alcohol intake as part of a comprehensive stroke prevention strategy.

Remember goals are just goals. They are important but not inflexible and carved in stone. Rather they are targets, which are appropriate for your new lifestyle of relative limitations, which you must strive hard to achieve. But you must be open to possibilities of change according to the individual nature of your limitations and, of course, your growing capabilities as you rehabilitate.
