Shocking million pound settlement for stroke survivor follows avoidable hospital misdiagnosis! A mother from Bishops Stortford received this compensation after Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust admitted a breach of duty regarding her 2016 stroke assessment at Addenbrooke's Hospital.
Despite presenting with left side paralysis, the patient was told her symptoms were likely stress related and was discharged without a specialist referral. This catastrophic error led to a second major stroke just one day later which resulted in permanent physical disabilities and chronic pain. The patient's legal team was able to highlight the basic mistakes and that an inconclusive CT scan caused an utterly preventable situation.
The Trust eventually settled for one million pounds to cover damages after initially changing their position on whether the error caused the second stroke. Such cases illustrate the critical importance of immediate specialist intervention and fast track protocols for all suspected neurological symptoms in UK emergency departments.
For stroke survivors in the UK, this highlights the necessity of robust legal advocacy if required/appropriate and to email Director Dr Tom Balchin if you think you need a steer in terms of the best solicitor & legal company to help you if you feel you have a case. ARNI Stroke Rehab & Recovery says that no amount of financial compensation can truly replace lost independence or the precious months missed with young children - and that we remain dedicated to supporting all survivors who have faced such life changing challenges to regain their functional control. 🏥⚖️🧠📉💪

Innovative magnetic hydrogel injection could soon prevent strokes! So, to do this, researchers from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the University of Geneva have developed a magnetic soft robot that can be steered via a catheter into the left atrial appendage of the heart.
This area is the primary source of blood clots in patients with atrial fibrillation and currently requires complex surgical procedures or metal implants to seal.
The study published in 'Nature' explains how the hydrogel transforms from a liquid into a flexible solid plug that perfectly conforms to the unique shape of a patient's anatomy. This magnetic gel was successfully tested in rats and a pig to demonstrate that it can safely block the appendage to reduce stroke risk without the need for invasive open heart surgery.
While the results are ground-breaking, the tech must now obviously pass rigorous human clinical trials before it can be considered for routine implementation in the UK. Expert consensus suggests that it may take between five and ten years for such bio-inspired materials to reach the NHS for standard patient care. ARNI Stroke Rehab & Recovery says 'hurry up with this non-invasive solution to reducing the incidence of primary and secondary strokes globally!'. 🧠💉🛡️

Wow! Fabulous invention.....hope clinical trials go well ❤️🩹
This is Dr Tom (back when he had some hair on his head!) A three plate pinch hold for time probably around 8 years after stroke with paralysis of the left side of his body. Now, you don't have to re-train to this extent, but just to inspire you!

Stretches are very important for improving your ability to grasp and release items with your hand. You can do them all the time; if possible.
The best results are seen in people who have consistently stretched their wrist, fingers and thumb on their affected side from very early on. You have to manipulate and stretch gently. Stretching however, by itself will not bring recovery. You have to be task focused, So when you have stretched you then ‘do something challenging’ such as trying to pick up a hairbrush and put it into a cupboard or drawer.

Neuroplasticity will work no matter how your arm has been affected. What matters is that you are stimulating the brain by moving your arm. So, if your affected arm has no movement, you can it exercise passively.
Passive exercises are performed independently by using your non-affected arm to move your affected arm. Additionally, having someone move your affected arm for you is another way to incorporate passive exercise into your routine.

Yep, we do this. Harry Taylor has his very first Botox injection next Monday (hopefully!) so will book in extra support from Neurowell in Canterbury, at the Parkinson's Centre. We're also going to book a neuro-physio assessment at the Kent Neuro Therapy Centre (previously MS Centre). They have hydrotherapy too.
Even with spasticity?
What about affected leg,I have right sided weakness?

V. Interesting: Pioneering cooling collar trial launches to improve recovery! Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust has announced the world's first in human study of a medical device known as the CB240 Aurora.
This portable system aims to lower brain temperature in a targeted way by being applied around the neck rather than cooling the entire body. Dr Andrea Lavinio leads the SELETHERM 2 study at Addenbrooke's Hospital alongside Dr Alex Joannides and Dr Edward Needham to enrol twenty patients with severe traumatic brain injuries.
Traditional induced hypothermia can cause systemic side effects such as immune suppression or chest infections which complicate recovery and offset potential benefits. By using this selective temperature control device, clinicians hope to limit brain swelling while avoiding the complications associated with intravascular or body surface cooling.
Patient advisor James Piercy believes reducing the risk of secondary injuries produced by swelling could dramatically improve the quality of life for survivors. While this initial pilot focuses on trauma, the portability of the device suggests future potential for rapid deployment at roadsides or during stroke emergencies.
Routine implementation in the UK will depend on successful larger trials and further clinical validation which usually takes several years. ARNI Stroke Rehab & Recovery says that such advancements in neuroprotection are vital for preserving neural pathways during the critical hours following an injury. 🏥 🧠 ❄️ 🚑 ✨
