Colleagues of ARNI Stroke Rehab at both UCL and the University of Oxford's Nuffield Department of Clinical Neurosciences, have developed a groundbreaking ultrasound helmet designed to break apart dangerous brain clots without the need for any surgery or invasive scalpels!
By using focused ultrasound beams that pass safely through the skull, this device can target a blockage with pinpoint precision and vibrate it until it fragments into tiny pieces the body can clear naturally. This means the high-stakes 'golden hour' after a stroke could soon be managed with a portable, non-invasive tool that stops damage in its tracks before it even has the chance to cause long-term disability π§
Early clinical tests show that this helmet can restore vital blood flow dramatically faster than medication alone, all while avoiding the dangers of opening the skull or navigating sensitive neural tissue with catheters. The tech indicates that a stroke can be repaired externally, preserving the precious connections that allow us to move, speak and stay ourselves. This shift toward surgery-free clot removal is a massive leap forward in making sure the baseline for recovery is as high as possible for every survivor π
The system has been successfully tested on human volunteers to demonstrate its ability to precisely target deep brain structures and modulate neural activity. While it shows promise for treating blood clots, the tech is also being explored for other conditions like Parkinson's disease, depression & Alzheimer's.
The most exciting part is the potential for this helmet to become a standard piece of equipment in ambulances and remote medical centers across the UK. Imagine a world where life-saving treatment begins the moment the paramedics arrive at your door, rather than waiting until you reach a specialist surgical hub. As this tech moves through its final large-scale trials, it serves as a powerful reminder that the brightest minds in science are working tirelessly to make stroke recovery faster, safer and more accessible for everyone. β¨

There is always hope for recovery through neuroplasticity. Although it may not happen overnight, it is possible for the brain to heal itself after a stroke by activating neuroplasticity.
By focusing on highly repetitive exercises and task-specific training during stroke rehabilitation, survivors can activate neuroplasticity and help the brain heal itself after stroke.

Dr Tom Balchin OBE is a well-known UK stroke survivor and founder of ARNI Charity 25 years ago, who was paralysed on one side. Here he is taking a chance to work his grip by holding a 3 inch handle (as big as a coke can) challenge dumbbell for as long as he can at BodyPower in Birmingham at the Chemical Nutrition stand with legendary long-term female bodybuilder and trainer @Marina Marlene Cornwall on the stopwatch ;) ... Approximately 40% of stroke survivors experience this difficulty: to comprehend or produce spoken or written language caused by a cerebrovascular accident. In half of these cases the language impairment still persists one year post-stroke. Aphasia has wide-ranging effects on the ability to function and quality of life of stroke survivors and easily leads to social isolation.
If you need help, ARNI SLT Telerehab can now help YOU, right now, wherever you are in the world!
The latest evidence shows clearly that you can conquer aphasia very successfully with the help of speech and language therapy.
And it also shows that SLT Telerehab is just as effective as in-person, face to face treatment.
We have a team of highly experienced low-cost specialist SLTs (all post-grads from Universities such as UCL, the University of Cape Town etc) who are available to help you right now, in your home, via Zoom. You get a one to one hourly service, based around your diary needs, from the comfort of your own home, with a highly experienced specialist speech and language therapist. To all our stroke warriors and families across Kent, we are facing a critical moment in 2026 that requires us to stand together once again to protect our local lifelines. The breaking news that all stroke services are set to be moved to William Harvey Hospital (WHH), leaving both Kent & Canterbury (K&C) and QEQM without any stroke care, is a deeply worrying development for our community.
Please take a moment to sign the petition on Change.org and, because some are finding it hard to share directly, please copy and paste this message to your own walls to spread the word. With 786 signatures at this moment, the momentum is building, but we need everyone who understands the importance of rapid stroke intervention to join us. Letβs protect our local hospitals and ensure that future survivors have the same fighting chance that we did by keeping these vital services right here in the heart of our community β¨

While the plan is to build a new 54-bed Hyper Acute Stroke Unit (HASU), moving these services out of Canterbury means significantly longer travel times for everyone in Whitstable, Herne Bay, Thanet, Dover and Folkestone. We know from our own journeys that when a stroke hits, every single second counts, and forcing ambulances to navigate the hell hole roads of the A28 and A251 or the often-congested M20 to reach Ashford puts lives at unnecessary risk π
The reality for many of us is that during the pandemic, the return of the stroke unit to K&C was a literal lifesaver, especially for those coming from Thanet who face the longest journeys. By moving these services away, we are looking at travel times jumping from a manageable 20 minutes to over an hour, which directly contradicts the Time is Brain message we all live by.
We cannot allow a situation where the BEFAST protocol is undermined by a map; specialist care is vital, but it loses its power if you can't get to it fast enough to save those precious brain cells. ππ
