is our latest member at ARNI in May, and in her first two sessions she learned how to get up from the ground (in three different ways!) She is a big star, and she is going to show what can be done when a seriously motivated person comes to train with the full intention of recovering her former movement. You will succeed.

I wanted to introduce you to a very special member of our stroke community and the ARNI family: Rufus the ARNII dog! 🐕💖
Rufus isn't just your regular dog; he's often seen wearing his very own ARNI Army shirt, representing our amazing charity and symbolising the strength, loyalty, and fighting spirit of stroke survivors everywhere! It's such a heart-warming image that reminds us we are all in this journey together, supporting each other every step of the way.
Just like Rufus stands by our founder, Dr Tom Balchin, and the entire ARNI network, our community offers that same steadfast support and guidance for survivors looking to regain their independence and quality of life after stroke.
Seeing Rufus in his little shirt always brings a smile to my face and reinforces the message that no one has to go through this alone. We are an army of survivors and supporters, fighting for recovery and advocating for better rehabilitation every day! 💪
Let's give a shout-out to Rufus for being such a great mascot and a reminder of the power of community and unconditional support! Keep up the good work, Rufus! 🐾#ARNIstrokerehabc#strokesurvivore#arniS#ArNiArmyi#rufusthedogR#communitysupporto#recoveryjourneyo#StrongerTogethere#HopeAfterStrokeher #HopeAfterStroke

A great tip is to sit on a chair, hand your stick, sticks or frame to a friend and get him or her to take those supports to the other end of the room. Now get your friend to help you stand up (if you need help), and help you as you make your way step by step over to the other side of the room. Build in distance and challenge as much as you can. I promise you that you will soon be walking again.

With Dr Tom is Dr Hatem Lazem, a physiotherapist and academic researcher from Exeter University, who, with Tom and ARNI Stroke Rehab UK's help during the initiation of the trial at Exeter, has been leading an incredible study combining non-immersive virtual reality technology with gamified exercises.
Hatem says that the goal is to make rehabilitation more engaging, motivating and easier to continue at home, which we all know is a massive challenge! He says that 'the approach allows us to measure progress and encourage repeated movement, which is vital for rehabilitation.'
A fellow survivor, Bernie Kielty, has been taking part in the study and even used the University of Exeter's VSimulator, a special motion capture facility that monitors movement to provide tailored exercises. Bernie shared how the programme 'showed me I could live again' after his stroke left him struggling to use his left side, helping him achieve goals like opening a milk bottle and playing with his grandchildren!
This innovative approach allows for real progress tracking and encourages the repeated movement that is vital for our brain'#strokesurvivorn#VRRehabt#hatemlazemS#berniekielty #vsimulatora#neuroplasticityK#StrongerTogether #strokerecoveryy #StrongerTogether #StrokeRecovery

This information is fantastic resource. Haven’t been through it all. Do you cover the 2024 NICE guidelines and recommended PGx testing of CYP2C19 to determine which anticoagulant is appropriate for the patient ?
Always remember this. ........

A brilliant initiative called AI-Stroke is working on something incredible: turning any ordinary smartphone or tablet device into a rapid stroke-assessment tool! 😮📱
Here’s how it works: Paramedics or triage nurses would simply record a short, 30-second video of the patient using the device. Then, sophisticated AI instantly analyses key stroke signs in that video. The AI looks at facial symmetry (checking for a droop), evaluates arm movement and analyses speech patterns to detect signs of a stroke within seconds.
The goal is early detection, even before a patient gets to a CT scanner at the hospital. This means faster treatment decisions, quicker interventions, and ultimately, better outcomes for survivors! 🚑💨
This innovation, which today announced the completion of a US$4.6 million seed round, could drastically reduce diagnosis time and bring expert assessment capabilities to ambulances, rural areas or busy ERs, helping bridge the gap in stroke care access.
Let's keep our fingers crossed that this tech makes its way into mainstream healthcare soon! 🙏💖 www.arni.uk.com

Hey everyone! 👋 I wanted to share some really insightful and important news that shines a light on something so many stroke survivors like us deal with - but which often goes unmentioned: gut health and gastro-intestinal problems/
Scientists at The University of Manchester have shed crucial new light on why our guts' immune system changes after a stroke. It turns out that a stroke doesn't just affect the brain; it has a profound and immediate impact on our entire body, including the immune system in our digestive tract...
Just published in Brain, Behaviour and Immunity, the study adds to the emerging idea of the 'gut-brain axis'. The researchers found that the brain injury triggers complex immune responses that disrupt the delicate balance of the gut's immune system. This disruption makes the gut lining more permeable (leaky!) and causes inflammation, which then contributes to all sorts of gastro-intestinal problems that many survivors experience during recovery.
Understanding this connection is massive because it opens the door to potential new treatments. By targeting these immune changes in the gut directly, doctors might be able to prevent these secondary health issues, reduce infections, and improve a survivor's overall recovery and quality of life.
ARNI Stroke Rehab UK comments that this is a great example of how interconnected our bodies are and how science is constantly working to understand the full picture of stroke r#ARNIstrokerehabw.a#guthealth

Really interesting! We tend to see ourselves in segments rather than 'whole-istic' (yes misspelled!) .... I've lost weight this year (with help) but I've changed how I eat and what I eat too and honestly your body does thank you. When I was pre stroke, and going to the gym it stopped the cravings for 💩 food.... We really are component, and interconnected parts of a whole
Darren Smyth what have I been sayin since my 1st stroke 3yr ago ..
Synergistic movements happen when you try to move one body part (like your arm) and end up moving multiple parts (like your arm, hand, and shoulder).
You can minimize synergistic movement patterns by practicing rehab exercises. Repetition of these movements helps rewire the brain and ‘separate’ your muscle movements so that your muscles move correctly – without making other unnecessary movements. With consistent practice, you will work towards being able to move your arm and only your arm.

Hey everyone! 👋 I have some very significant news that just broke in the medical world regarding stroke prevention! 🧠✨
Bayer has announced positive top-line results from their landmark Phase III OCEANIC-STROKE study for their new investigational drug called Asund exian (space added so that our Google Ad words aren't paused due to our mention of a registered trademark drug, which has happened numerous times)!
The study found that a 50 mg once-daily dose of Asun dexian significantly reduced the risk of ischemic stroke compared to a placebo in high-risk patients who had recently experienced a non-cardioembolic ischemic stroke or TIA.
This is a potential game-changer because Asun dexian is a new type of anticoagulant that works by inhibiting Factor XIa. The goal of this approach is to prevent harmful blood clots from forming without significantly increasing the risk of major bleeding, which is a common and serious concern with current blood thinners. The study met this safety goal, showing no increase in major bleeding events. Bayer is now getting ready to engage with health authorities globally for approval, and we look forward to the detailed results being presented at a scientific congress soon 🤞
Stay strong and hopeful, everyone! The future of stroke prevention seems to be looking a bit brighter everyday! 🙏💖

It's great news for prevention definitely.... Again too late for me at the his moment but I'm presuming this could be the blood thinner of choice even after ischaemic stroke?
Fantastic news 👏 as I also have osteoarthritis, and taking anti-inflammatory NSAIDS increases the blood bleed risk, so best avoided with current anti-coagulants. I wonder 🤔 what the contraindication profile is with this new drug.
A post about Christopher Reeve’s activism following his accident is on my Facebook feed after this one. Similar in spirit. It’s excellent news for future prevention x

An exercise called clock-face trace is good fun and great partner practice for training, challenging and testing the balance. The main training method is to think always of keeping the affectedfoot at 12 o’clock, and use the good foot. But you can do it the other way round too if you are very confident.
