A short video of Tom talking about ARNI. ARNI was formed in response to the demand throughout the UK from stroke survivors, who state that they are ‘stuck in limbo’ after therapy comes to an end. We train and provide specialist instructors & therapists; then guide them to you upon request. They will teach you the ARNI functional ‘retraining’ strategies and will support you to take charge of your own recovery via these principles.

The ARNI programme involves task-specific functional movement training, development of physical management strategies, stroke- specific resistance training with adjuncts such as technology and pharmacological inputs recommended as appropriate. It was borne out of Tom Balchin’s own rehab experience. He credits part of his success to an “innovative” physio who, in the early days after his stroke, taught him the importance of regaining self- reliance as quickly as possible.
If you like this post then please share it with others. Each time that you share a post, you can directly help other people – as who knows which people in the world might find us and gain, either directly from the charity or simply by being able to copy an ‘innovative and useful’ move/trick of the trade that might help them manage after stroke.
Every time you share, you could directly help someone – as knowledge is power ;)

To all intents and purposes, you possess a ‘use-it-or-lose-it’ brain. Function gets worse with non-use but neuroplasticity means that the finger-maps in the brain, if given the appropriate inputs, can grow and rewire in find ways to perform the lost function.

ARNI has a Zoom-based speech and language service for the public with specialist SLT colleagues. . If you have aphasia, you will find it hard to say what you’re thinking (expressive) or understand the spoken word (receptive). It can also affect your reading and writing skills. Aphasia occurs in as many as 40% of stroke survivors, making it the most common communication disorder caused by stroke, but many people conquer aphasia completely.

Synergistic movement refers to coordinated movements that occur when multiple muscle groups are activated simultaneously. When a stroke affects the part of the brain that controls muscle movement, your brain cannot correctly send signals to your muscles. Thus, motor difficulties such as abnormal synergistic movement may occur. The best way to retrain your brain is with consistent practice of stroke rehabilitation exercises.
We have trainers throughout the country who can help with your recovery. Call us on 0203 053 0111 o0r email support@arni.uk.com to find out if there's one near you.

Mark, I simply can’t ethically give advice to you to do anything at all over Facebook and you know as well as I do that you should only follow evidence-based data or at least indications which show as much evidence of moderate to high degrees of efficacy as possible. So I’ve asked Dr Tom – and the two sources he strongly encourages you to read come from the EBRSR website, are absolutely BRILLIANT and are the two Clinical Handbooks downloadable as Sections 3 and 4 on www.ebrsr.com/clinician-handbook . Hope that helps.
So playing a round of golf would certainly help then?
The balance problems of stroke survivors are often related to uneven weight distribution and difficulties in muscle use, which increases postural sway during standing. Postural control requires the ability to generate and apply forces to control the body's position in space, which makes standing on a foot with which your brain cannot control seem to be an impossible task.
Call us on 0203 053 0111 or email support@arni.uk.com to find out if there's a trainer who can work with you on your balance.

While spasticity treatment exercises may help to stretch and strengthen the muscles, the primary objective of these exercises is to activate neuroplasticity. Over time, the adaptive changes made through neuroplasticity may help spasticity subside, allowing the affected muscles to remain relaxed unless functionally contracting.
