Such as great review!
This is the most wonderful book. As stroke is one of the biggest killers in UK, it is an essential book to have in any household. The book takes you from 'soup-to-nuts', including a section which discusses risk factors. It is interesting, easy to read, practical and relevant. It really is a must-have companion for stroke survivors and their families, carers and medical professionals.
It is extremely positive and this is what stroke survivors want and need. It will give great hope to those who find themselves thinking that they have little future, helping them to get back on the right track, and enabling them to make huge strides back to their former selves. Tom Balchin has lived this life and he now provides others with confidence and great hope! I also love the way that it emulates what ARNI therapists practise.
I cannot recommend this book highly enough. Thank you so much Tom - this fantastic book will make a huge difference to stroke survivors and their families all over the globe.

Neuromuscular stimulation, also called functional electric stimulation, (commonly abbreviated as FES) is the clinical application of a small electric current to the intact nerves of your body, in order to trigger a muscle contraction and increase cortical excitability during training. This contraction is then incorporated into a functional activity like walking. A clear distinction needs to be made between Therapeutic Stimulation and Functional Stimulation. The former is an exercise where you relax whilst the stimulation works on its own. FES on the other hand, incorporates this elicited muscle movement into your everyday activities, like standing, walking, reaching out, etc. Like CIMT, it is probably most suitable to try if you possess some wrist and hand movements. I’m not aware of anyone trying to use CIMT and FES protocols together. I can’t see why FES couldn’t be built into a CIMT routine.

Have YOU got aphasia?
Approximately 40% of stroke survivors experience this difficulty: to comprehend or produce spoken or written language caused by a cerebrovascular accident. In half of these cases the language impairment still persists one year post-stroke. Aphasia has wide-ranging effects on the ability to function and quality of life of stroke survivors and easily leads to social isolation.
If you need help, ARNI SLT Telerehab can now help YOU, right now, wherever you are in the world!
The latest evidence shows clearly that you can conquer aphasia very successfully with the help of speech and language therapy.
And it also shows that SLT Telerehab is just as effective as in-person, face to face treatment.
We have a team of highly experienced low-cost specialist SLTs (all post-grads from Universities such as UCL, the University of Cape Town etc) who are available to help you right now, in your home, via Zoom. You get a one to one hourly service, based around your diary needs, from the comfort of your own home, with a highly experienced specialist speech and language therapist. Please enquire to arni.uk.com/get-remote-speech-language-help-now/ !

Mum had severe aphasia after suffering a dense stroke which has also left her unable to walk, with her right side paralysed. We were terribly disappointed by the lack of therapy she received to date...

Did you know that sleep irregularity (chronically disrupted sleep and highly variable sleep durations night after night) may increase the risk for atherosclerosis? This is where your arteries become narrowed, making it difficult for blood to flow through them. It increases your risk of heart attack and stroke.
These results suggest that maintaining regular or habitual sleep durations, or sleeping close to the same total amount of time each night, may play an important role in preventing cardiovascular disease.
According to a study led by Dr Kelsie Full of Vanderbilt University Medical Center, participants with greater irregularity in their sleep duration were more likely to have a higher burden of coronary artery calcium, more plaque in their carotid arteries, and greater systemic atherosclerosis and stiffness in their blood vessels, commonly referred to as “hardening of the arteries.”

Free weights not only allow you to do the movement in a way that is more natural to you, they also allow for slight variations in the exercise, which many machines (found in gyms) do not.

A cause of poor balance after stroke is impaired muscle strength and coordination in the legs and core. Therefore, pursuing exercise to improve strength and coordination in both the legs and the core muscles can result in improved balance.
In addition to generalised rehabilitative exercises, practicing weight-shifting exercises, balance tasks, and gait training can be especially effective.
ARNI Trainers s are excellent resources to consult about which leg and core exercises may be most effective for your specific condition.

Your results will be directly proportional to the consistency you show to yourself. This is why keeping some sort of training diary are really essential. Don’t even think about not buying or making one. If you can write well enough, buy an A4 diary or buy a dedicated training diary from ARNI via the website. If you can’t write, but can access a computer, set up your own spreadsheet to use.
