Interview with Tom: Stroke and Disability 2013
⚠️ This is a bit of a national wake-up call; today, the Stroke Association has declared that stroke care in England is in a 'dire state' (the Stroke Assoc is in a position to issue periodic warnings like this)😟
The charity highlights a deeply worrying situation: too few patients are getting the timely treatment they need, and shockingly, only one third(!) receive the recommended aftercare to physically and mentally recover. Obviously, this means many thousands of stroke survivors are being failed by the system and are not getting the crucial help they need to rebuild their lives.
Prob the most concerning is the 'postcode lottery' that exists for accessing clot-busting treatments. 🗺️ This highly effective treatment can significantly reduce the likelihood of long-term disability, yet your access to it depends simply on where you live. This inequality is unacceptable and has a real, lasting impact on our lives as survivors (and those of the families).
ARNI Stroke Rehab UK reckons we need some government attention and action to improve care and support across the board so that every stroke survivor gets the best possible chance at recovery. #strokecarecrisism#postcodelotterys#ActNowt#strokesurvivort#healthcareS#ARNIstrokerehabare #ARNIStrokeRehab

Very welcome intervention. I hope they collaborate with other leading stroke charties to campaign and put pressure on health authorities to improve Stroke care which is hit & miss presently.
I had my stroke in Sept 2023 - never given clot-busting treatment and it wasn’t even mentioned to me whilst I was in A&E
I had no aftercare at all just a phone call because of covid, did it all myself lots of puzzles at 1 am lol the way i am now is down to me i was appalled with the queen Elizabeth i said id rather crawl in the gutter and croak it.
We called the ambulance 3 times for my dad (the first time well within the 2 hour window) and each time they said it was just vertigo - they then eventually took him in to hospital on our insistence (as we couldn’t move him ourselves) where he then had to wait 12 hours in a chair in A&E before even being seen by a doctor. The scan confirmed he’d had a significant stroke…It makes me so angry knowing that his outcome and recovery could have been so different if the first ambulance crew had taken his symptoms seriously.
Agreed
When you have stroke as category at 2 for ambulance response the whole system needs to wake up. Also research money is very low in comparison to cancer, both devastating one most definitely life changing.
Two hours wait for an ambulance didn’t give a stroke victim a chance … let alone clot busting options.
I've had a stroke and see no one. I was meant to have an appointment this month but it's been cancelled.
This makes me so mad to read this, postcode lottery and it should be universal care and recovery x
I live in wales. Had stroke 2024, never received clot busting drug. Now permanently disabled, im 53.

I had the vertigo first they thought I was having a diabetic hypo
ARNI can we also please highlight BALANCE, VERTIGO, Eyesight loss or changes and migraines.....I didn't present as FAST at all and I'm convinced the ambulance staff triaging me initially only used FAST. Hospital sent my husband's friend home after he presented at A&E with migraines and eyesight loss.....only to later discover the stroke. I'm going to be doing my own video later today too, but not all strokes look FAST💔
I agree with both Julie and Bee. My husband didn't show any of the "classic" symptoms. He started to lose sight, had vertigo and a migraine. He told me he was having a stroke. Everything I've ever seen about someone having a stroke, told me he shouldn't have been able to tell me that. If it wasn't for the amazing dr in A&E who realised what was happening and called the local stroke unit, it could have been a very different story.
I had no warnings
⚠️ An important new study from the University of Bath has found that hand gesture controls being currently developed for the next generation of virtual and augmented reality (VR/AR) systems risk excluding millions of stroke survivors.
Researchers discovered that common freehand interactions like pinching, swiping and pressing virtual buttons are often inaccessible, painful or fatiguing for survivors with even mild upper limb impairments.
The study warns that these systems are being designed with a very narrow idea of a typical user, potentially creating new barriers instead of breaking them for those who could benefit most from inclusive technology. For example, the popular ‘pinch to select’ gesture relies heavily on the index finger, a joint often affected by stroke…
Potential solutions include allowing users to remap gestures, amplifying small movements and stabilising cursors for those with spasticity and/or flaccidity.
ARNI Stroke Rehab UK says we need thoughtful design from the start so no one gets left out of the future of tech. 🌍🤝

Before my stroke I would or could never have appreciated this exclusion - but overnight disability changes your perspective ultra fast..... I could rant about social construction from my social science days but I know you get it. Normal has a predominant foothold in the able bodied world....
Stroke survivors can sometimes feel that once their NHS-prescribed rehabilitation is complete, their recovery reaches its endpoint. But ARNI Stroke Rehab UK is working to change this through it's innovative models of rehabilitation ranging from intensive in-person therapy to digital neurorehabilitation in the ho#arnistrokerehabukh#strokeexerciser#neurorehabr#strokerehabr#ARNIstrokerehabr#neuroplasticityi#strokerecoveryo#strokesurvivorscanrscan ... This will extend the time window (to save function) after stroke from 4.5 hours to 24 hours! 💖 Lumosa Therapeutics has announced positive results from its Phase 2b clinical trials for a thrombolytic compound called LT3001. This novel treatment is showing a massive potential to dramatically extend the therapeutic time window for acute ischemic stroke patients! ⏰
The current standard treatment has a very narrow window of up to 4.5 hours, but LT3001 appears safe and potentially effective when administered up to 24 hours after symptoms begin. This means more people could receive vital treatment to prevent lasting damage.
The data presented at the 17th World Stroke Congress shows LT3001 is still a few steps away from routine clinical practice. Lumosa has approval to conduct a multiple-dose Phase 2 trial in the UK, which is expected to finish enrollment within about a year.
The entire process for new drug development typically takes several more years. ARNI Stroke Rehab UK thinks that an optimistic estimate for its widespread availability in the UK might be around 5-8 years from now (likely in the early 2030’s) assuming all future trials are successful and regulatory hurdles are cleared.
This is a game-changer in stroke research and offers immense hope for the future of patient care! 🙏✨ #ARNIStrokerRehabUK #Awareness #MedicalBreakthrough #LT3001 #ClinicalTrials #Hope

I approach my recovery with curiosity - I'm fascinated by my brain's efforts. I also accept that things take longer to 'cement' themselves now but I do notice ☺️ in 2 months I've improved my ability to put a ponytail in - it's still not 'normal' (what is!!!) but it's improving as I continue with the efforts
I had my stroke 11 weeks ago and feel that I've been going backwards for the past fortnight so this post is very timely for me.
