ARNI Training on Saturday! 🧠💪 Like Mark and Sharon, if you're working on improving your wrist mobility and find that tricky pronation/supination movements are very hard, adding a dedicated wrist rotator device, like the device they're using to your rehab routine may be a good idea! 🔄
Many survivors find that devices like the ones ARNI Stroke Rehab UK has used for many years, with a range of resistance (in use are 15kg and 20kg versions) available on Amazon offer consistent resistance and a controlled way to build strength and range of motion.
The ability to effectively pronate your wrist (turning your palm down) is a mighty step in neurological recovery: it’s essential for functional tasks like preparing your hand for reaching, grasping objects, and then releasing them effectively. 🍎✍️ Priming this movement helps retrain those neural pathways!
Talk to your ARNI Neuro-instructor about incorporating targeted rotator exercises into your daily practice.
And if you've not yet got an instructor to come to your home and train you, just phone Mrs Kate Wheeler (ARNI Programmes Director) on 0203 053 0111! 🌟

If you use a hand bike at the gym with resistance is this also similar? I try to get my arm to go through the proper range without shoulder hitching using it.
Is there a a link for the device they are using please?
Exercise: Prone leg curls This is an absolutely essential movement to do, two times per week or more. A problem I still have, and one I see in many stroke survivors, is that they have very little strength in the hamstring muscle at the back of the affected leg. This problem can continue for years without people realising realising it, especially if they seem to be getting around well. However, I promise you that your ability to walk will be vastly improved if you do this exercise. I would rank it in the top 3 things that you need to do in terms of retraining in order to walk well again.
Unfortunately in most stroke survivors, myself included, the hamstring muscles at the back of the legs are so badly weakened from non-activation whilst in hospital (when the muscles literally shrank), and from subsequent neglect afterwards, that a surprising amount of stroke survivors often cannot raise their affected foot very far towards the back of their leg in a lying position, let alone a standing position. They just haven’t got the strength.
Find out more about how to exercise these muscles in The Successful Stroke Survivor book by Tom Balchin.

Did you know that the step-wise removal of the buildup of toxic waste products in your brain after the initial injury (and after emergency treatment is complete) is one the most significant challenges in stroke treatment ? 🤢🚫
Scientists at Monash University in Melbourne are joining forces with brilliant minds at the Yale School of Medicine in New Haven, USA, to developing a new, high-tech approach aimed at tackling this 🤔
When an ischemic stroke hits, blood flow stops, and brain cells start starving and dying. Even when blood flow is restored, the damage continues as inflammatory toxins and waste products accumulate rapidly. The team is exploring ways to hyper-activate the brain's natural 'cleaning system', known as the glymphatic system, which usually works best when we're asleep. 😴🧼
The goal is to enhance the removal of this toxic waste quickly and efficiently, minimising secondary damage and improving patient outcomes! 🙏 This groundbreaking research leverages Monash’s expertise in circulatory systems and Yale’s leadership in neurology and translational medicine. 🌟👩🔬👨⚕️

Great news, mice to see researvh is making progress
Wow - I didn't know that about the ischaemic strokes (that was me - thrombylosis worked fortunately)..... But I guess this also makes sense in really looking at good nutrition too!
Here is some testimonials from amazing ARNI stroke survivors!
If you want to know more about the ARNI Programme, what is involved, the training and what it can do for you then take a read of some of these.

If you feel you can PLEASE SIGN the petition on Change.org below to stop the planned closure of a vital stroke rehabilitation centre in the Black Country...💔🏥, then write below to tell us you've signed it! The ARNI Stroke Rehab & Recovery community is rallying together to fight a proposal by the Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust that could see the much-needed 12-bed unit at Blakenall Row shut down.
You can find the petition here www.change.org/p/preserve-stroke-bed-rehabilitation-services-for-walsall-residents
After signing, please just verify via the email that will come to your mail box ;)
The potential closure has naturally sparked significant concern among patients, families, and local leaders; the centre provides crucial, specialised care for patients recovering after a stroke, helping them regain independence and rebuild their lives. For many people, this local facility is essential to their recovery journey.
Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust states the move is temporary due to ongoing staffing pressures and difficulties recruiting specialist nurses, but ARNI Stroke Rehab UK has found that campaigners fear it will become permanent. They argue that centralising care away from the community setting will lead to worse outcomes for patients who need that dedicated, local support system.
Local councillors are urging everyone affected by the proposed changes to have their say during the consultation period - so if you live in the Black Country and rely on these essential services, your voice is needed now more than ever! to make your opinion known to local health authorities.
Let's stand together to protect our essential local healthcare services and ensure stroke survivors get the care they deserve! 🙏💙

Good one everyone! Let's get some more signatures!
Tom has signed it! 😉

As a stroke survivor I have signed. There is very little help out there as it is so closing would be disastrous for patients.

Stretching and passive range of motion exercises can help minimize the effects of spasticity and can also activate neuroplasticity.
Therefore, having someone move your arm or leg for you can help repair the brain’s connection to your muscles. And the stronger the communication, the less spasticity you will experience.

Ever wondered how strong the link between chronic stress and stroke is?! 🤯🧠 Well, you're right to think about this - it's very real!!
Multiple studies and a large meta-analysis involving over 950,000 participants have confirmed that chronic, self-perceived psychosocial stress is significantly associated with a higher risk of experiencing a stroke. The increased risk is moderate, similar in magnitude to other known factors like diabetes.
So how exactly does something as seemingly intangible as stress affect our physical brain health? 🤔 The connection happens through a few key biological pathways: first, when we're stressed, our bodies activate the 'fight-or-flight' response, releasing hormones like cortisol and adrenaline. While useful in the short term, prolonged elevation of these hormones due to chronic stress leads to sustained high blood pressure, vascular inflammation and damage to artery walls over time.
Second, chronic stress can also lead to unhealthy coping mechanisms, such as poor diet, lack of exercise, smoking, increased alcohol consumption, and insufficient sleep. These lifestyle factors independently contribute to stroke risk by promoting high blood pressure and atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries).
Intriguingly, recent research published in Neurology® suggests there might be a gender difference in vulnerability. One study on young adults found that women with moderate to high stress levels had a significantly higher risk of stroke compared to men, highlighting that women may need to take stress symptoms particularly seriously.
ARNI Stroke Rehab UK says that the good news is that stress is a modifiable risk factor: we can actively work to manage it. Simple strategies like finding joy in hobbies, regular physical activity (which is proven to reduce stress levels), and practicing mindfulness can make a real difference in protecting your heart and brain hea#ARNIstrokerehabi#strokeawarenesso#mentalhealthmattersn#stressmanagementM#brainhealths#ScienceNews##PreventionIsKeyenceNews #PreventionIsKey

For the meta-analysis nvolving over 950,000 participants, in Frontiers Neurol. 2025 November 6;16:1669925. see: pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC12631615/
I agree. I was 48 had a haemorragic stroke. I was very fit, ate well, no medical reason for my stroke. They put it down to chronic stress.
Totally agree, I was working two jobs, main one Mon-Fri, then a weekend remote job too - just to make ends meet as I am a single mom. I was 48, fit and healthy, and then had a Stroke - nearly six years ago now, Feb 2020 - just before the UK went in to lockdown
Any chance of a link to the meta-analysis 🙏?
Yes after 14 yr , and after mine i feel i can honestly say this is more right than i would of ever admitted too . I am cognativley damaged now but was the 1st brittan to get the thrombectomy operation in Australia ,before it got over to UK , nhs system so iv had time to do a lot of thinking and working out etc etc .
