if you're using a stepper try going up with both your good foot and our affected foot because ultimately you are practicing to manage a flight of steps. This will enable you to practice lifting your affected leg, extending and placing your affected foot , then using the toes on your good side to spring onto the step. To get off the stepper backwards use your good foot first.

Prayer Finger Bends This exercise is self-explanatory: it involves working your bad hand so that a prayer-position can be assumed. Depending on the nature of your tone and the degree of contracture, this may well be impossible, but it is worth, as a ‘tester exercise’, trying to align each finger pad to the opposite one. This ‘matching’ of all the digits is an exercise in itself. If you haven’t tried this, which I’m sure you will have, it’s a good way for those who are perhaps training you to see immediately the action control that you currently possess. It doesn’t matter that your palms themselves may not be able to touch: approximating this position is, in itself, retraining. For most, the thumb seems hardest to control. The exercise calls for some stretching of the wrist, which has the effect of pushing the fingers back. This can be very hard to do, because your fingers may well simply return to a more grouped position. So why stretch in this position? It’s a diagnostic stretch that you can do before doing other exercises such as stick work, task-board work or partner practice. As an antecedent to task-related activity it’s great as it will show you whether previous work has been effective.

Stroke survivors want to be more independent but usually need some help to do so. Our aim is to take you from the stage where an NHS therapist becomes unavailable, to the stage where you can go on to make the activities of your daily life part of the ‘retraining’ you do to help yourself.

Why do core exercises? Core exercises stabilise the trunk. Having a stable “base” is extremely important for the arms and the legs to move efficiently.
